We approach sustainability as caring for the well being of each other and for our environment. This is a delicate balance at times that is often a win win and at times requires compromise. For example, do we source all things organic and charge more, possibly out pricing our neighborhood? Or do we focus first on local and fellow small businesses that work responsibly to provide a quality ingredient we are proud to use that allows us to make bread for everyone and pay our employees well? Brake Bread is on its way to becoming a zero waste bakery. By starting as a bike based subscription service, we omitted the waste of overproduction and became St. Paul’s only carbon free carb delivery. Now with an added retail storefront, we have transitioned to compostable packaging and organics recycling, reducing our current weekly garbage to the equivalent of a 2 person home. Plus, if you return any of our packaging we’ll see it on to its next life.
